Augment Code
An AI coding assistant built for large codebases, helping professional developers understand dependencies, refactor, and deliver features efficiently in complex projects.
Tool overview
Augment Code is a plugin-based AI coding tool that deeply integrates with VS Code, JetBrains, Vim, and other major IDEs. Its core strength lies in “repository-level understanding”: beyond the current file, it indexes dependencies, module relationships, and project structures across the whole codebase. This enables highly relevant suggestions during refactoring, cross-file edits, and legacy system migration. Its Agent mode automatically breaks down tasks into manageable steps, and it supports a 200k-token context window plus persistent memory that learns your coding style over time.
On the plus side, Augment Code once scored 65.4% on the SWE-bench benchmark, and its task-list feature brings transparency to complex problem-solving. The memory system reduces contradictions across conversations, and it shines in dependency-heavy languages like Java. A limited free period in mid-2025 attracted many early adopters.
However, there are notable downsides. Since October 2025, billing switched to a credit-based system: the standard individual plan costs roughly $60/month with 13,000 credits, and heavy users may see costs climb quickly.
