Based on the available evidence, ChatCut is seeing real early adoption, especially in the Chinese X creator community around Codex-assisted video editing. Still, it is better understood today as a highly automated AI editing workspace for rough cuts and motion-heavy social videos, not proof that it can fully replace CapCut, Premiere, or a full post-production stack. Popularity proof comes from reposts, demos, and “Codex + ChatCut” showcase threads; usability proof is stronger in the smaller set of hands-on tests, tutorials, and the Zhihu write-up showing an end-to-end workflow.

Its practical value is fairly consistent across sources: it can remove pauses, filler words, repeated takes, and false starts from talking-head footage; generate subtitles; align A-roll with B-roll or picture-in-picture clips; and add some collage, transitions, and lightweight motion effects. One user even compared some results more to AE-style effect execution than to ordinary timeline trimming. So it is not best described as a chatbot, subtitle-only tool, or a traditional NLE by itself. A more accurate analogy is an agent-driven execution layer for short-form video editing.
