Chengpian, launched by Baidu Wenku in May 2024, is an integrated AI tool purpose-built for long-form writing. It offers two modes: generate from a topic or imitate a reference text. It first creates an editable outline, then produces a structured draft of over 10,000 words. A Word-like editor allows for further polishing, expansion, or summarization. The tool accepts up to 100 files (200MB each) including images, PDFs, and Office documents, and can interpret image content beyond simple OCR, generate bar/line/pie charts, and create PPTs and mind maps.
Backed by Baidu Wenku and Baidu Academic, Chengpian provides web-wide and academic search, enabling direct citation and reference integration. It also reviews the full text for errors and suggests improvements, such as adding cases or data. For students, researchers, and content professionals handling dense documents, this dramatically streamlines workflows.
The main drawbacks are generation time (around 10 minutes for long texts) and occasional straying from uploaded reference materials, requiring manual fact-checking. It is currently free, but future pricing is unclear.
