Cici is a streamlined AI assistant launched by ByteDance for international markets. Unlike its domestic counterpart Doubao, Cici deliberately drops social features and complex multimodal capabilities, keeping only core functions like text chat, image generation, and analysis. This tool-first design simplifies localization and has driven downloads rapidly, especially in Mexico, the UK, and Southeast Asia, where it has repeatedly topped Google Play’s overall free apps chart.

Technically, Cici adopts a pragmatic hybrid approach: it integrates OpenAI's GPT and Google's Gemini for text generation (early ads claimed GPT-4, but in tests the model identified itself as GPT-3, with potential hallucinations), while image generation uses ByteDance’s PicPic and agent development relies on its Coze platform. This mix allows ByteDance to leverage mature third-party models while planting seeds for its own technology.

The main advantages are free access, multilingual support, and focused functionality—especially math problem solving for students.
