Tool overview

If you already use multiple model APIs, or want production-grade visibility and control over inference traffic, Cloudflare AI Gateway is worth evaluating first. If you just want the “best model” or a ready-made AI assistant, this is not that. It is not a chatbot product or a model training platform; a better analogy is an API gateway / reverse-proxy layer for LLM inference.

The evidence supports its practical role fairly well: official materials and tutorials point to a unified endpoint for multiple providers, with routing, logs, analytics, caching, and debugging, plus some unified billing/wallet scenarios. Zhihu walkthroughs show custom provider proxying and connecting clients like Copilot-style endpoints through the gateway. X posts also demonstrate dynamic routing and new model availability. That is good evidence for “can connect, manage, and route,” but not proof that it is always cheaper or faster across all providers.

Adoption cost is mainly infra complexity, not end-user learning. You need to understand API keys, endpoints, provider differences, and routing behavior.
