Devin Desktop is Cognition’s rebranded and upgraded version of the Windsurf editor, repositioned as a unified dashboard for managing queues of local and cloud AI agents. Instead of being a traditional code editor, it provides a single-pane view to track and direct multiple agents running tasks in parallel. It supports the Agent Communication Protocol (ACP), enabling integration with third-party agents such as OpenAI Codex. The product also enhances the terminal experience with Devin for Terminal and brings local execution capability through Devin Local, following a hybrid local-plus-cloud strategy. The main advantage is its suitability for complex workflows that require parallel subtasks and multi-model coordination, reducing the overhead of manual context switching. However, the behavior of AI agents can still be unpredictable, and security heavily depends on sandbox robustness. Transitioning from a conventional IDE to an agent-supervisory interface also involves a significant change in mental model and learning effort. Devin Desktop is currently available for download.
