IOPaint (formerly Lama Cleaner) is a fully free and open-source AI image editing tool that leverages cutting-edge models such as LaMa and Stable Diffusion to perform smart erasing, object replacement, text drawing, and image outpainting. Users simply brush over the areas to modify, and the AI fills them with content that blends naturally with the surroundings.
It helps remove unwanted objects, watermarks, or defects; replace image elements with new ones; repair old or damaged photos; add or replace text while maintaining the original style; and expand canvases by generating plausible context. The tool works on CPU, GPU, and Apple Silicon, and offers a one-click Windows package for easy setup.
Advantages include being completely free, no internet required, and privacy-friendly since all processing is local. The web UI is intuitive. The downside is that it requires some technical setup for non-Windows users (Python environment); performance is better with a dedicated GPU; advanced features may need separate plugins. However, the Windows package lowers the entry barrier significantly.
