Tool overview

Based on the available evidence, o1 is worth considering when tasks are difficult, multi-step, and error-sensitive, but it should not be mistaken for a general-purpose automation agent or a full developer platform. A better analogy is a general LLM tuned for harder reasoning, not an IDE, workflow engine, search tool, or standalone research system.

In practical use, official posts and Chinese commentary consistently frame o1 around stronger performance in coding, math, science, and structured reasoning. OpenAI’s own announcement says the full release is faster and stronger than preview and now supports image uploads. More capability-relevant signals come from test-like writeups and case anecdotes—such as recreating games with HTML or solving harder problems—because they say more than reposts do. Even so, the evidence base here is still limited and does not prove that o1 reliably beats GPT-4o across all developer work.

On cost and access, the clearest pricing evidence is official subscription info from Sam Altman on X: o1 is available in ChatGPT Plus at $20/month, while Pro is $200/month and positioned for the hardest problems.
