Opengap is an open standard for defining AI agents in a framework-agnostic manner, with all definitions stored as plain text in Git repositories. Its primary purpose is to decouple agent descriptions from any specific runtime, allowing agent configurations to be versioned, reviewed, and shared like regular source code.

The key advantage is portability and version control: agent definitions become independent of the underlying framework, enabling teams to switch or combine different implementations without rewriting agent logic. Git-native storage gives audit trails, branching, and merge capabilities out of the box, which is particularly useful for collaboration and compliance.

The major limitations stem from its early stage. Public documentation is scarce, and there is no visible ecosystem of tools, adapters, or real-world deployments yet. Teams adopting Opengap today may need to invest in building custom integrations and accept uncertainties around long-term maintenance and community growth.

From a cost perspective, the standard is open source and free to adopt; deployment relies on the user’s own Git infrastructure.
