Tool overview

Based on leaks and discussions between May and June 2026, Claude Sonnet 4.8 is the upcoming update in Anthropic's Sonnet line. Within Anthropic's three-tier product strategy, Sonnet is aimed at “mainstream model, market share,” expected to compete against GPT-5.6 and Gemini 3.5 Pro. Community testers noted that the current Sonnet 4.6 has fallen behind on benchmarks like Flappy Bird, making Sonnet 4.8 a necessary response. Some developers joked that the just-released Sonnet 5 performs more like what Sonnet 4.8 should have been, indirectly suggesting Sonnet 4.8 could approach flagship-level quality.

Leaked Claude Code npm source code already contains references to “Sonnet 4.8.” The internal codename “capybara-v2-fast,” which appears alongside it, supports a 1M context window. If adopted in Sonnet 4.8, this would greatly improve handling of long documents and large codebases. The model's exposure alongside Opus 4.8 indicates simultaneous iteration across the high and mid tiers, with Sonnet 4.8 likely inheriting some of Opus's optimizations for a better cost-performance ratio.
